Waiter, I think there's some porn in my Dead Or Alive
Recently, my XBox 360 headset went south on me; the ear speaker is on the fritz and I could only hear when I played sound through my TV speakers. So, while playing online, in order to hear people well, I've had to turn down the in-game volume. However, with Dead Or Alive 4, I like to leave the character voices on, just because some of the characters like Jann Lee sound hilarious.
Recently though, I started picking up on little things. Something weird was starting to float towards my attention in the sea of coolness that is Dead Or Alive 4, but this boardered a little more on "okay, did I just hear what I think I heard?" One thing that's come to my attention is that one of Gen Fu's prefight one-liners sounds an awful lot like "Suck...MY dick!" It's bad enough that it sounds like he's saying "suck my dick", but what's worse is the way he says "my", like the person he's saying it to has options.
But that's something you can notice with or without the background noise on. One thing you'll really only notice if you play the game with just the voices on...is that the game starts to degenerate into what I can only describe as audio porn. When I say audio porn, I mean, if you close your eyes and just listen to a fight, everything sounds like the characters are really, really going at it. From Hitomi's high pitched battlecries, to Tina's nearly passionate death yells, the game sounds like a porno for the blind or at least the hard of seeing.
Don't believe me? Go play the game with everything but voices off. Tina sounds like she's in the midst of a passionate exchange between herself and some fanboy groupie that got lucky, Hitomi sounds like she's nailing the crap out of somebody, (in a good way *wink-wink*), and those two are just the stand outs. Listen to Ayane and Kasumi, or even newcomer to the series, Kokoro. Get in the right type of hit, and they sound less like they're in pain, and more like they're busy...well...gettin' busy.
Just don't listen to a fight between two guys. Especially Gen Fu and Elliot. That just sounds wrong, wrong, WRONG!
Now, I realize this is a fighting game, and that the sound director was probably asking the VAs to sound like their enthralled in the heat of battle, but I really would have loved to have been there when he was saying to Tina or Hitmoi's VA "More moaning! No, moan harder!" I can just see a sound room full of horny Japanese guys staring at her with their mouths gaping open and cigarettes just on the edge of their lips waiting to be smoked afterwards.
Dead Or Alive 4, is an awesome game, but is also known for it's busty, scantly clad women. Glad to see that when they went for sexy, they didn't just stop at the graphics in terms of hormonal stimulation.
